Yay! I made another skirt for Skirt Week 2013! and it is for .... ME!!
This is #2 skirt for Skirt Week 2013 and my first garment for ME!
This is the one I tried to knock-off.
I almost bought this, this was really cute( it is not available anymore). I don't know why I didn't buy this, because of its price, maybe.
I didn't think I could make similar one, at all. But when I found this great tutorial of crafterhours, I thought "maybe I can make this...".
Original one is made with denim and it has dirts on waist line. So it looked really difficult to make( for me). But this tutorial uses knit, so I don't need to make any dirts and it seemed to be really simple( for me, again!).
I started with drafting pattern. You can find easy following direction on original tutorial, so just jump on it and read all through!
From here, I will use same letters indicating measurements used in Adrianna's tutorial. I made pattern according to Adrianna's tutorial, but I changed the length of the skirt and made patterns for hem ruffles.
First, I calculated all measurements according to tutorial, then I shortened D( length from the hips down to skirt hem) to 2/3.
For the hem ruffle, I made two half circle patterns.
Below is pattern direction for BACK ruffle.
And for FRONT ruffle, if you want to make it curved like mine ( and Anthro's ), you need to make it longer ( you can keep it straight, of course). So, FRONT ruffle pattern should be like this.
I wrote +2 inches to hem length, but it can be 3-4 inches, depending on your curve of ruffle. And it's safer to make it longer.
After making patterns, I cut fabric. Two pieces of skirt from main fabric and lining fabric. Then cut ruffles ( you don't need lining for the ruffle).
I actually made ruffle patterns to be cut on fold, but it just depends, you can make it half circle or quarter circle, whichever is fine.
Next, I sewed skirt part also according to Adrianna's tutorial ( from 17 -22) .
Then, leaving skirt hem raw, I sewed ruffles side seams right sides together. Now you have one big donught shaped circle ( not a perfect circle, but it doesn't matter).
Then sew ruffles to skirt, . You should start from BACK.
With right sides facing together, line the hem of skirt with inner circle edge of the ruffle. Sew from BACK.
Then, pin FRONT part of ruffle to front part of skirt, curving as you like. I decided how to curve in front of mirror( and it turned out bit too short ;) ).
Pin and sew ruffle to hem of the skirt. Then cut your front skirt hem curving along the ruffle.
You can finish the hem of the ruffle with serger or zigzag, but I left it raw ( mostly because the length of the skirt was bit short ;) ).
Now, you're done!!
I used ponte fabric for main skirt ( which was also in JoAnn's remnants rack! ) and my old tshirt for waistband.
This skirt is in Straight section of Skirt Week 2013 of Crafterhours. Please check out other fabulous skirts on Flickr pool!!
I'm thinking about making another one for me and one for A for Skirt Week.. but next week, my kids are staying at home all day everyday! So, maybe it won't happen.. let's see!
Happy Sewing!!
I love it! I am so impressed :)
